About this district
Tegel belongs to the district of Reinickendorf and is situated on the shore of the Tegeler See. Tegel is located in the north of Charlottenburg and is the second largest district in Berlin. Tegel is mainly known for its international airport. Actually called Otto-Lilienthal-Airport, the short form “Tegel” is mostly used. Tegel is known for its many incomparable destinations and is also appreciated as a residential area with little industry. Families and senior citizens live here, but this district is also in a state of transition. After the planned closure of Tegel Airport, the area is to be used for other purposes, for example, the well-known Beuth-University is to extend its campus there.
Tegel is not only well connected by the airport. The underground lines U6 or U8 take you to the other parts of the city in a few minutes. There is also a connection with three S-Bahn lines. Especially on the border to Brandenburg, extensive bus lines complete Tegel’s overall good infrastructure. Especially if you are looking for some peace and quiet outside the city, the Tegel lake, which is 4 kilometres long in total, is not far away. At its northern end you can find the Humboldt Castle, the most important monument of the district. Not far away from it you’ll find the “Dicke Marie”, probably the oldest tree in Berlin.
In Tegel you can find everything between city villas and high-rise housing estates. Despite some large housing estates, the residential buildings are usually lower than in other districts. In the shopping centre “Hallen am Borsigturm” you can find everything from cinemas, a bowling alley and a fitness studio, and meanwhile you can enjoy the historical ambience of the locomotive construction halls. Living in Tegel means living a little away from the hustle and bustle. But nevertheless, you are located near to very attractive tourist destinations. The Berlin99 tip: The Rehberge open-air cinema.
