About this district
The district of Steglitz-Zehlendorf is located in the southwest of Berlin and borders Spandau to the northwest, Charlottenburg to the north, and Schöneberg and Tempelhof to the east. The two eponymous areas are very different. Zehlendorf is Berlin’s so-called green lung, almost half of the area consists of forest and water areas. Young and old can relax here and even swim on public beaches in summer – it is considered the Berlin holiday destination on the doorstep. Thanks to the Free University in Dahlem, Zehlendorf is a science location. Living in Zehlendorf is considered quiet and dignified. The residential areas at Wannsee and Schlachtensee are considered to be the most expensive and most popular residential areas outside the centre of Berlin. The cityscape is characterized above all by its past as an American occupation zone. Long walks in the woods of nearby Grunewald are particularly recommended, where you can find relaxing silence away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Steglitz, on the other hand, is a very traditional residential area, known above all for its Schlossstrasse, a shopping street with a total of four shopping centres, which competes with Ku’damm for Berlin’s largest shopping mile. Living in Steglitz means tranquility, bourgeois idyll and at the same time big-city flair. The apartments are located in almost every imaginable type of house. From 60’s social buildings to beautiful old buildings and single-family homes.
The underground line U9 or the above ground line S1 are fast connections to Potsdamer Platz, Zoologischer Garten or Friedrichstraße. This makes it possible to enjoy life in a less hectic part of the city, while the pulsating life of the other districts awaits you just 25 minutes away. The Literary Colloquium Berlin, the Botanical Garden and the “Bierpinsel”, one of the most extraordinary buildings in Berlin, are also located here. The Berlin99-tip: The boat rental at Schlachtensee.
